The region was
once called Huntington South. Nathaniel Conklin moved his family to the area,
eventually calling it "New Babylon", naming it after the ancient town
of Babylon around 1803. The town was officially formed in 1872 by a partition of the Town of Huntington.
Montauk Highway 27A is called Main Street as it runs through Babylon village with its little shops it is one of long Island's nicest places to visit.

Main Street Route 27A Merrick Road/Montauk Highway was called South Stage Coach Road back in 18th century when George Washington toured Long Island four times, he traveled along it stopping in town like Babylon.
